Response to Course Material #2

Response to Course Material

We have done a lot more in class since my last post. We learned a lot about literary eras and lenses. Personally I have had difficulties with both of these in the past but reviewing them in class really helped. I always have found literary eras really interesting and on Friday we did that graphing sheet to organize the eras and different things in those eras and I found the patterns very interesting.

Unfortunately, I had to read The American Dream on my own so I did not get the experience of hearing it read aloud by different people but I found it to be a very interesting read. It was unlike anything I had read before and I was quite confused at first. But then in class we read the Theater of the Absurd and that article really helped me understand the book and the reasons for some of the ideas in the book. I am nervous and excited about our close reading assignment with this book! Hopefully it all goes well!

  1. Hi Marie!
I also found that The American Dream was very interesting and confusing, but that the packets and class discussions were helpful. But maybe for next time, try and apply what you learned to something you have read in the past. Other than that, great job!

  2. I agree, The American Dream was pretty confusing until the we talked about in class which helped me too. I think the close reading really helps your understanding of the material much better. How do you think the clarification on this play will help you later on with other plays/novels?

  3. I read The American Dream on my own too--I don't think reading it in class would have helped me because it was just so confusing. The articles we read in class helped me synthesize the information and understand what the play was actually about. How did The American Dream relate to other things you had read? You said it was unlike anything you've ever read, but I'm sure that's no the case. The messages in The American Dream are definitely in more than one story. How did The American Dream fit in with literary lenses? Which lenses did we use to analyze it? I think you need to work harder in thinking about things we've done in class rather than just summarizing.
